Lime plastering and replacement of oak laths, Chiswick

"A high quality job, using traditional materials to a professional standard. . The team were polite and well mannered and left the house in a good condition at the end of each day, including during the particularly filthy early stage of the work when it was necessary to remove a great deal of old plaster which had blown. When one element of the products needed for the work (replacement flooring) was not available, RJM Plastering demonstrated flexibility of approach in providing us with a solution. The team also carried out decoration work in the final phase of the project."

His approach, enthusiasm and flexibility ensured that a difficult and potentially hugely disruptive job was undertaken with minimum fuss for the client. I would have no hesitation in recommending RJM for any similar types of job, however large, and will certainly use their services again in future."

Jim Glover, RH4

Interior Plastering and Decoration using traditional materials

"Rob, Mike and Rory did a fantastic job on our Grade II listed 500 year old farmhouse. They replaced all the ceilings in the upstairs area and exposed roof beams, removed all the old cement render and replaced with traditional lime plaster and painted with lime wash. They are very reliable, polite, clean, competitive and most importantly their work is excellent. There are not many people out there that create a good a finish as RJM. Very highly recommended."

Major Repair work to Lime Mortar and Brickwork, Box hill

RJM Plastering (now RJM Heritage Ltd.) have completed what turned out to be a difficult and challenging project to restore the brick gables of our Grade II* seventeenth century house, extending over some 10 weeks. The inappropriate use of cement mortar, to cap and back some of the gables, had resulted in the trapping of water and severe deterioration of some of the brickwork (including many bricks with special detailing), and much of the pointing in the gables, and in ingress of damp to and through the mortar in two second-floor rooms. Previous recent restoration work by other contractors to some of the gables had failed.

We are delighted with the work carried out by Robert and Martin and their assistants. They rose to and devised solutions to each of the many challenges they were presented with on close examination of the gables. They had to demolish and reconstruct several courses of brickwork, forming the shaped bricks necessary to replace those that had deteriorated beyond use, and incorporated lead flashings and other weatherproofing measures, before applying the final lime mortar cappings and backings to the gables. They liaised with and obtained the approval of the local conservation officer as necessary.

They clearly have great enthusiasm to match their expertise in the restoration of historic buildings through the use of traditional materials, in particular lime mortar and lime washes, and rightly take great pride in their work. They have also been a pleasure to have around, and took pains to arrive when scheduled, clearing up well at the end of the day, and being self-sufficient while on site.

We hope to commission them for further work on our house, having confidence that they will be able to solve other problems that maintenance of a historic building involves.
